Some time ago I saw a few reels and posts on Instagram from creators making their products' parts in bulk. Like I could be making 20 legs and arms ready to be used for my future characters which is actually a very clever thing to do if I am being honest. But this is something I do not do. One of the things I abolutely love in my work is actually to take my time and split my day into little different moments. When I dye my fabric, I do it in a medium size kitchen pan, so I can only do a very small amount at a time. I quite enjoy realising that I do not have the right colour for my doll's hair because it means that I have to get up and paint some more in the kitchen. If I am lucky and it's sunny, I even get to visit the garden to let everything dry in the wild. I find that working this way helps with alleviating the monotony of the day but more importantly it gives space for my brain to do its "thing". It is amazing the amount of time I felt I was stuck for ideas on a design and just by taking the time to choose a few fabric to go stain with coffee, a solution started to emerge in my mind. So, yes, even though it is maybe not the best business strategy, I like to work "slow" and to take my time. Don't get me wrong, I do sometimes work on two different characters at a time, especially if I have to wait for one to dry and I also do sometimes create a few legs and arms in advance for the next little doll but nothing I could ever call bulk making. |
